The Carrack-class Patrol Cruiser is the anti-starfighter version of the Carrack-class Light Cruiser. It has been modified for Patrol and escort duty. It is also used as garrison ships for many outer rim Imperial worlds.
Design
The main modification to these vessels is the removal of the ion cannons and installation of Laser Cannons in their place. After the Death Star was destroyed over Yavin, the need for an anti-fighter armament was imperative for imperial patrol vessels. While smaller corvettes and patrol ships had weapons, they could not handle the growing fleet of the rebels. A larger vessel was needed which could stand against anything pirates and rebels could muster. The answer was the Carrack. Designs for newer ships were being developed but none were ready for production at the time of Yavin. It retains the ten heavy turbolaser cannons and the tractor beam projectors. Shielding has been reduced at the cost of better maneuvering, Faster hyperspace capabilities, and a longer operating tour.
