The CR95-class corvette, also called the Corellian Heavy Escort, is the successor to the CR90 Corvette. It is heavier and more powerful than its predecessor, making it a more battle ready vessel.

Design

The CR95 was designed to carry more cargo and weapons than the old CR90 model. Often, the large ventral cargo hold, below the engine section, was converted into a small hanger for star fighters. One large Heavy Turbolaser was placed on the ventral side of the prow. Eight Double Turbolasers on the Dorsal and ventral hull offered offensive capability in all arcs. Four Double Laser Cannons, two on the port and starboard prow hull and two more on the port and starboard amidships hull offered anti-fighter protection.

History

The CR95 was developed with the escort role in mind. More cargo capacity and a mix of heavy and light weapons made it an ideal platform for militarization. These advantages came at a price, however, and the Light Escort did not have the speed that made most Corellian craft famous, nor was it capable of extended deployments. Despite these drawbacks, the Corellian Light Escort sold extremely well for CEC, partly due to the fact that it was introduced shortly before the outbreak of the Clone Wars. Although the majority of Corellian Light Escorts were purchased by various independent groups, in order to protect their own interests, many were also purchased by the Republic Navy for light duty. After the rise of the Empire, to a large extent, the need for these vessels in their intended role was removed. Many of the ships were sold to various home fleets and system defense forces, while most of those owned by the Imperial Navy were transferred to Imperial Customs. The Corellian Light Escort has also become a popular vessel amongst pirates who are able to get their hands on the ship. The combination of heavy weaponry and starfighters in a small vessel are virtually ideal for piracy, although, whenever possible, most pirates try to modify the ship to use ion cannons instead of turbolasers.
