Barbaca was found by the Clone Troopers following the execution of Order 66, and was among the numerous Wookiee captives that eventually found themselves engaged in forced labour for the Empire.

The specifics of the incident were never recorded, and Barbacca has never since revealed them to anyone, but it resulted in the Wookiee attacking one of his fellow slaves with his claws; in Wookiee culture, such an action is considered a heinous social crime, and thus Barbacca was ostricised from the group as a "Madclaw". After provoking several fights among his slave group, the Imperials - who didn't understand Wookiee society, and simply thought he was provoking them somehow - labelled him a "B.A." slave (for Bad Attitude) and had him removed from the work pool.
