- "The first thing Titian Snow learns about sand is that it doesn't taste good. He spits and gags, wiggling his tongue to try and get rid of the gritty, dry taste in his mouth, waving his hands in a distressed fashion until at last his mouth feels better, and a big spot of damp sand has accumulated before him. The infant jams a fist into his mouth, gumming it almost thoughtfully as he wonders if he should try picking up any more sand, when a bright thing appears at the edge of his vision. He wiggles a bit, shifting himself ever so slowly to bring the object into view. Hana's standing there, dressed in red, bright pink hair waving in the slight breeze. The baby's wide eyes grow even bigger as he beholds her, a paragon of bright colors, loud noises, and constant motion, a little goddess for his infant world of senses. He waves his hands frantically; he must catch her attention! He needs this little-mommy to pick him up! He screams at her, bouncing a little and kicking his feet in impatience."
